Cytapheresis

Cytapheresis is a selective removal of a cellular component of blood by apheresis. Red cells, granulocytes, or platelets may be harvested. Cytapheresis is used to collect specific components from blood donors, or, in the case of therapeutic cytapheresis, to remove excess cellular components from patients with blood disorders (white blood cell depletion, platelet depletion, red blood cell depletion or exchange.

What is White Blood Cell Depletion?

Hyperleukocytosis is a complication of various leukemias and can result in life-threatening leukostasis. Leukocytapheresis is a therapeutic tool to reduce leukocyte counts in patients with symptomatic or threatening leukostasis until induction chemotherapy works. During a single procedure, WBC count can be reduced by 10–70%.

What is Platelet Depletion? Platelet depletion is used when platelet counts are dangerously elevated and patients show symptoms. High platelet counts may carry a risk of stroke and heart attack. Procedure goal is to reduce greatly elevated platelet numbers to reduce morbidity and/or mortality of the patient. In most cases, platelet depletion can be performed using intravenous needles that are placed in each arm. Blood is removed from one arm, processed in the machine, and returned to the patient through the other arm. In patients with small or fragile peripheral veins, the placement of a central venous catheter may be necessary.

What is Mononuclear Cell Collection? The demand for collection of mononuclear cells from the peripheral blood of patients for therapeutic purposes is rapidly increasing. Automated blood cell separators are usually designed for collection of blood components from healthy donors. Mononuclear cells are collected to treat various hematologic disorders as well as for novel treatments like cancer vaccine.

What is Red Blood Cell Depletion/Exchange? Therapeutic apheresis procedure that rapidly removes “abnormal” red blood cells that are contributing to a disease process and replaces them with donor red blood cells.
